Running the game with Wine

From Ymirheim Wiki

There are multiple ways to run the game on Linux. In this article we cover the way to install the game using a native Wine installation.

To see other ways of running the game on Linux, see the main article.

Important to note that each Linux distro is different, the setup in your particular case may differ and it's up to you to do the research. This article only covers general steps and some examples for specific versions of most popular distros.

In summary, the game requires the latest stable version of WineHQ (10.0 or higher, 11.0+ recommended), DXVK, core Microsoft fonts, and .NET Framework 4.5.2. You can run the game without DXVK if you don't have the Vulkan drivers, but it's not recommended as you'll most likely have degraded performance and graphics glitches. On modern versions of Wine or Proton you can also use wine-mono instead of the full .NET Framework.

For more information on how to achieve this setup, see below.

Installing Wine and required dependencies

Wine is available for most Linux distros and the setup is documented very well. Just navigate to the Download page and pick your distro.

Here we provide examples for some of the popular distros.

Pick your distro of choice and expand the corresponding section. DO NOT try to use the commands below if you're using a different distro, refer to the WineHQ article instead.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Linux Mint 22

Install WineHQ and Winetricks:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
wget -O - https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key -
sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/noble/winehq-noble.sources
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
sudo apt install winetricks

Install 32-bit Vulkan Drivers:

sudo apt install mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386 libvulkan1:i386

Fedora Linux

On Fedora 43+, the native package can be used:

sudo dnf install wine winetricks

Arch Linux

On Arch Linux, you can use the native wine package, which tracks the Wine's Development branch:

sudo pacman -S wine winetricks

If you have any trouble with the Development version, you can try the Stable branch from AUR:

yay -S wine-stable
sudo pacman -S winetricks

Configure Wineprefix

For the game to run correctly, you'll need a wineprefix with corefonts, d3dx9, dxvk, and dotnet452 components. If you already have one, make sure it's compatible.

In this example we're going to assume that you're starting from scratch and we're going to create a default wineprefix compatible with the game. In this case, make sure you delete the ~/.wine folder (if you have it) before proceeding.

Wine 10

On older versions of Wine and on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Linux Mint 22, you'll need a 32-bit prefix to be able to run the game and achieve acceptable performance.

WINEARCH=win32 wine wineboot
winetricks corefonts d3dx9 dxvk dotnet452
winecfg -v win10
winetricks videomemorysize=2048

Wine 11+

On modern distros with Wine 11.0+, you can safely use the Wine's new WoW64 system and create a 64-bit prefix.

wine wineboot
winetricks corefonts d3dx9 dxvk dotnet452
winecfg -v win10
winetricks videomemorysize=2048

During the installation, various Microsoft installers will pop up. Just install each of them normally.

Running the game

At this point, you should have the latest version of Wine installed along with all the required components and drivers.

Now you can just download the original YmirheimLauncher and, if you're using a default wineprefix, just run it as it would be a normal Windows program. For most modern distros this will also create a shortcut in your programs menu and/or on the desktop.
