Running the game on Linux
Linux support is currently experimental, but it's still possible to successfully run the game on Linux and achieve good performance. Linux support is not native, but achieved with a translation layer (Wine or Proton).
There are multiple ways to run the game on Linux, here we cover the most popular ones. Please choose your preferred way:
- Lutris — The easiest way to install the game on Linux. Lutris is a popular game launcher on Linux that simplifies the setup and uses Wine/Proton as a backend. We provide a guided installation script for Lutris, so the installation process is very easy.
- Heroic Games Launcher — Another popular game launcher for Linux with Wine/Proton as a backend.
- Native Wine — A slightly more involved setup via command line, but provides more control and potentially better performance compared to the launchers.
Troubleshooting
Launcher is unable to start
Make sure the dotnet452 winetricks package is installed in your wineprefix (this is usually not needed if you use Lutris or other launchers).
Black screen or crash when starting the game
Try launching the game in the Safe Mode.
The game hangs on the splash screen
If you're trying to start the game in Safe Mode, there could be a message box window underneath the splash screen, which you cannot see because Wine sometimes doesn't force the always-on-top windows to actually be on top. Close the message box window using your taskbar and the game will start.
Black pixellated artifacts on screen
This problem can happen on older versions of Wine with Intel GPUs. Try a newer version of Wine or try disabling DXVK. If you're using a launcher, try using a native Wine installation instead.
Low framerate
Wine performs extremely poorly when rendering masked/transparent textures. Try disabling Foliage in the game's video settings and/or lowering the view range.
If you're using integrated graphics, disabling FXAA is also a good idea since it can eat ~5 FPS on some systems.
Wine performance can drop significantly on high resolutions (above 1080p). If you're using a 4K monitor it may be better to run the game in a lower resolution and let your monitor to scale it up.
Fonts are not displaying properly
Make sure the corefonts winetricks package is installed in your wineprefix.
Controller is not recognized / Camera spinning non-stop with a controller
The game uses the old DirectInput (DInput) API to communicate with the controllers, which only works with Xbox-compatible controllers. First, try using a different version of Wine (older or newer). If that didn't help, your only option is to translate your XInput controller to DInput using x360ce or similar, or try to manually map your controller with Wine registry keys.
